You and your friends.I read somewhere that the majority of children with autism are blessed with stunning bodily beauty. I would have to agree as I look into the face of my granddaughter, Alexis. Perhaps God, in His infinite wisdom, decided to gift these children with attractiveness in order to make their rough road ahead more bearable. Or maybe it's just that, because of their introspective nature, we can see all the way into their souls.

Autism is a brain disorder that affects children's capability to speak and divulge socially to others. It is estimated that one in every 150 children will be affected by the disease and four out of five of those will be boys. Normally, children are diagnosed before they are three years old. Autism researchers are working hard to educate pediatricians to look for the signs of Autism at well baby checks as a child approaches their second birthday. The earlier Autism is detected the better.
Is it an epidemic or is it just being diagnosed more these days? Doctors believe that Autism has been around for decades but has just recently been given a name. They say that thirty or forty years ago
children were labeled "mentally retarded" and settled in institutions where they languished until they
died.
Some believe it may be childhood immunizations that cause Autism. Intensive studies are going on around the world to try to search the mystery of this horrific disease. However, many doctors and experts in the field now believe that immunizations could be a trigger in children already predisposed to the disease. They also believe there may be more than one cause of Autism.
What are the symptoms that you should look for if you think your child may have Autism?
Your child has no language skills or very few words by the age of two.
Your child prefers to play by himself and does not interact with other children.
Your child does not retort when you call his or her name.
Your child has started to throw tantrums, kicking, screaming, head banging, etc.
Your child walks on their toes.
Do not be afraid to coming your physician if you feel something is not right with your child. Make a list so you don't forget to ask him what's on your mind. If you have a "gut" feeling and your physician doesn't agree, get a second opinion. With Autism, early determination is the key to your child's future.
If your child is diagnosed with Autism, it is very foremost to explore every choice ready to you in the state where you live. States such as Arizona and Utah have free programs for children with Autism. Once diagnosed, therapists, specifically trained to work with Autistic children, will be assigned to work with your child on a daily basis. The therapists will even come to your home several days a week to teach speech, collective skills, music, etc. To your child. However, not every state has these programs. If your state does not offer these astonishing options for your Autistic son or daughter, you might seriously think appealing to a state that does. Remember, early detection and Intensive therapy will make a huge inequity in your child's future.
My granddaughter, Alexis, is eight years old now. She has been in therapy since she was diagnosed at two years old. Today she goes to a collective school where she attends extra classes. She's happy, (most of the time. She still has moments where she gets frustrated), she's talking a wee and learning how to put words together to ask for what she wants. But best of all, she is learning to cope with the world around her and who knows, maybe someday she'll be able to live on her own. Whether way, she has been a blessing to our lives. She has enriched us, taught us unwavering love, patience and we wouldn't have her any other way but just the way she is.
